Cleaning anal beads correctly after every use is not optional. The rectum contains bacteria that can cause infection if transferred to other parts of the body on an uncleaned toy. Proper cleaning takes less than two minutes and protects both your health and the longevity of the toy.

This guide covers the correct cleaning method for each material type, the difference between everyday cleaning and deep cleaning, what products to use and avoid and how to dry and store the toy after cleaning.

Why Cleaning Anal Beads Properly Matters

Anal toys that are not cleaned thoroughly after use present a genuine hygiene risk. Bacteria naturally present in the rectum can remain on the toy surface after use and, if the toy is then used again without cleaning, re-enter the body or be transferred to other areas. Non-porous materials such as silicone, glass and stainless steel do not harbour bacteria within the material itself, but they can carry it on the surface. Thorough cleaning removes this surface contamination reliably.

Cleaning before use as well as after is also important. Even a toy that was cleaned and stored correctly since its last use can pick up dust or other contaminants in storage. A quick wash before use takes seconds and removes this risk entirely.

Everyday Cleaning: All Material Types

For standard everyday cleaning after each use, warm water and a mild antibacterial soap is the appropriate method for all non-porous anal bead materials. Use an unscented, fragrance-free soap rather than strongly perfumed or antibacterial soaps with harsh additives, which can irritate sensitive tissue if residue remains on the toy.

Rinse the toy under warm running water. Apply a small amount of soap to your hands or a clean cloth and work it across the entire surface of the toy, paying particular attention to the joins between each bead and the cord or stem. These joins can trap residue and are the area most likely to be inadequately cleaned. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs completely clear and no soap residue remains. Pat dry with a clean lint-free cloth or allow to air dry completely before storing.

Cleaning by Material Type

Material Everyday Cleaning Deep Cleaning Avoid
Body-grade silicone (non-motorised) Warm water and mild antibacterial soap Boil for 3 to 5 minutes or top rack dishwasher (no detergent, hot cycle) Silicone-based cleaners, bleach, fragrant soaps
Silicone with vibration motor Warm damp cloth with mild soap. Do not submerge unless fully waterproof rated Wipe down only. Check waterproof rating before any water contact with motor Submerging non-waterproof toys, boiling, dishwasher
Borosilicate glass Warm water and mild soap Boil for 3 to 5 minutes or dishwasher Sudden temperature changes (thermal shock). Discard if chipped or cracked
Stainless steel Warm water and mild soap Boil, dishwasher or 10% bleach solution (rinse thoroughly after) Abrasive cloths or scourers that scratch the surface
Hard ABS plastic Warm water and mild soap Wipe with 10% isopropyl alcohol solution. Do not boil Boiling, dishwasher, bleach

Deep Cleaning: When and How

Everyday soap-and-water cleaning is sufficient for regular personal use between sessions. Deep cleaning, which sterilises the toy rather than simply cleaning the surface, is recommended when: sharing the toy between partners even with barrier protection removed; after any session involving broken skin or bleeding; after extended periods of storage; or periodically every few weeks of regular use as a precautionary measure.

Boiling: Place non-motorised silicone, glass or stainless steel toys in a pan of water and bring to a boil. Boil for three to five minutes. Place a cloth or towel at the bottom of the pan to prevent the toy from knocking against the metal base. Remove carefully and allow to cool fully before handling. Never boil toys with vibration motors or electronic components.

Dishwasher: Non-motorised silicone, glass and stainless steel toys can be placed on the top rack of a dishwasher and run on a hot or sanitise cycle without detergent. The heat of the sanitise cycle sterilises the toy. Do not add detergent, which leaves residue that can irritate tissue. Allow to cool completely after the cycle before storing.

Sex Toy Cleaners

Dedicated sex toy cleaners are an effective alternative to soap and water, particularly for quick cleaning immediately after use. They are formulated to be safe on body-safe toy materials and leave no irritating residue when rinsed. Spray-format cleaners are convenient for travel. Most toy cleaners are alcohol-free and safe on silicone. Avoid toy cleaners that contain alcohol, as this can dry out and degrade silicone surfaces over time.

Cleaning Checklist

Clean Before and After Every UseA wash before use removes any dust or contaminants from storage. A wash after use removes bodily fluids and lubricant before they can dry and become harder to remove. Neither step takes more than a minute.
Focus on the JoinsThe joins between each bead and the connector are the most commonly missed area during cleaning. Work soap into these crevices deliberately. A soft toothbrush dedicated solely to toy cleaning can help reach these areas on textured designs.
Rinse ThoroughlySoap residue left on the toy surface can irritate delicate tissue. Rinse under warm running water until completely clear. Run your fingers over every surface while rinsing to confirm no slippery soap film remains.
Dry Completely Before StoringMoisture trapped in storage encourages bacterial growth. Pat dry with a clean lint-free cloth and then allow to air dry for at least thirty minutes before placing in a storage pouch or case. Never store a damp toy.
Do Not Boil Motorised ToysBoiling a vibrating anal bead set destroys the motor and electronics and may warp the toy body. Motorised toys must be cleaned by wiping only, unless the product is explicitly rated as fully waterproof and submersible.
Inspect Before and After CleaningCheck the toy for cracks, tears, chips or broken joins before and after cleaning. Any damage to the toy surface creates crevices that cannot be cleaned and compromise the toy's hygiene. Discard damaged toys immediately.

Drying and Storage After Cleaning

After cleaning, dry the toy with a clean lint-free cloth, then allow it to air dry for a minimum of thirty minutes before storing. Storing a toy while still damp encourages bacterial growth and can cause silicone surfaces to develop an odour over time.

Store cleaned anal beads in a breathable fabric pouch or a dedicated toy storage case. Breathable storage prevents moisture from becoming trapped around the toy. Avoid storing anal beads in sealed plastic bags, which trap humidity. Store silicone toys away from other silicone toys where possible, as silicone can react with itself over time if stored in direct contact.

Keep stored toys away from direct sunlight, extreme heat and humidity. A drawer or bedside cabinet is ideal. For glass toys, use a padded storage case that protects against chips and cracks.

What Happens If You Do Not Clean Anal Beads Properly?

Inadequately cleaned anal beads carry bacteria from previous use into the body on subsequent sessions. This can cause bacterial infections, yeast infections (if transferred from anal to vaginal use), or sexually transmitted infection transmission if the toy is shared. For non-porous toys, thorough cleaning and drying after every use eliminates these risks almost entirely. For porous materials, which cannot be fully disinfected, the risk remains regardless of cleaning effort, which is one of the key reasons porous materials are not recommended for anal toys at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you clean anal beads after use?Rinse under warm water, apply a small amount of mild antibacterial soap and work it across all surfaces, paying particular attention to the joins between each bead. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs completely clear, then pat dry with a clean lint-free cloth and allow to air dry before storing.
Can you boil anal beads to clean them?Yes, for non-motorised silicone, borosilicate glass and stainless steel toys. Boil for three to five minutes on a gentle simmer. Never boil toys with vibration motors or electronic components, as this destroys the electronics. Always check the product material before boiling.
Can you put anal beads in the dishwasher?Yes, for non-motorised silicone, glass and stainless steel toys. Place on the top rack and run on a hot or sanitise cycle without detergent. Do not put motorised or vibrating beads in the dishwasher. Allow to cool completely after the cycle before handling or storing.
How often should you deep clean anal beads?Everyday soap-and-water cleaning is sufficient for regular personal use. Deep cleaning by boiling or dishwasher is recommended when sharing the toy, after any session involving broken skin, after extended storage, or periodically every few weeks of regular use as a precautionary measure.
Can you use bleach to clean anal beads?A 10% bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) can be used to sanitise stainless steel toys and rinsed thoroughly afterwards. Bleach is not recommended for silicone toys, as it degrades the surface over time. It is not required for everyday cleaning: soap and warm water is sufficient for regular use.
