Are Vibrators Waterproof?

A clear guide to vibrator water resistance — what IPX ratings mean, the difference between waterproof and splash-proof, which toys are bath and shower safe and what to check before getting your vibrator wet.

Many vibrators are waterproof — but not all. The difference matters both for safety and for cleaning. Knowing your toy's water resistance rating before taking it into the bath or shower prevents electrical damage and, more importantly, electric shock risk from non-waterproof toys used in water.

The good news: the majority of quality modern vibrators are fully waterproof. Waterproofing is standard in premium sex toys because it makes cleaning under running water straightforward. But the range varies from fully submersible to splash-proof to not water-resistant at all — and these distinctions are important.

Understanding IPX Ratings

IPX ratings are international standards that describe how water-resistant an electrical device is. For vibrators, the most relevant ratings are:

IPX7: Fully waterproof — the standard for quality vibrators. Means the device can be submerged in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes without damage. Safe to use in the bath, shower or pool. Can be cleaned by rinsing under running water.

IPX6: Water-resistant — can withstand powerful jets of water but not necessarily submersion. Generally safe for shower use but check manufacturer guidance before fully submerging.

IPX4: Splash-proof only — can handle water splashes from any direction but should not be submerged or held under running water. Clean with a damp cloth only.

No IPX rating: Not water-resistant. Should never be used near water. Clean by wiping with a damp cloth — never rinse under water.

Check Before You Use in WaterAlways confirm your vibrator's water resistance rating before using it in the bath or shower. Check the product page, packaging or manual for the IPX rating. If none is stated, treat the toy as non-waterproof.
IPX7 for Bath and ShowerOnly use a vibrator in the bath or shower if it is rated IPX7. This means it is fully waterproof and safe for submersion. Using a non-waterproof vibrator in water creates a serious electric shock hazard — this is a genuine safety risk, not a minor inconvenience.
Never Use Non-Waterproof Toys in WaterUsing an electric toy that is not waterproof in the bath or shower can cause electric shock. This is a real risk. If your vibrator does not have an IPX7 rating, do not take it into water under any circumstances.
Dry Before ChargingEven IPX7 waterproof vibrators must be dried thoroughly before connecting a charger. Water near a charging port while charging creates an electrical hazard. Dry completely with a lint-free cloth and allow the charging area to air dry before plugging in.
Magnetic Chargers = Most WaterproofVibrators with magnetic charging ports have no exposed charging socket — making them the most waterproof design. The sealed body achieves a higher level of waterproofing than toys with exposed charging ports.
Bath Use: Some Practical TipsWater changes the sensation of vibration — many people find the warm water environment enhances pleasure. Use water-based lubricant even in water — silicone and oil-based lubes interact with bath water and can irritate. Rinse the toy immediately after bath use and dry before storing.

Lubricant and Water

A common misconception is that using a vibrator in water eliminates the need for lubricant. The opposite is true — water actually washes away natural lubrication. Always use water-based lubricant even in the bath or shower. Apply directly to the area being stimulated — it will stay in place long enough to be effective. Avoid silicone or oil-based lubricants in water as they disperse and can leave a residue in the bath and potentially cause irritation.

Care After Water Use

After bath or shower use: rinse under running water to remove any soap or product residue (IPX7 toys only). Dry thoroughly with a lint-free cloth — including any seams, textured areas and the charging area. Allow to air dry for several minutes before storing. Do not connect a charger until the toy is completely dry. Store in a clean, dry pouch.

Are vibrators waterproof? Many are — but not all. Quality vibrators typically carry an IPX7 waterproof rating, meaning they are safe to submerge in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes. Always check your specific toy's rating before using it in water. If no rating is stated, treat it as non-waterproof.
What does IPX7 mean for a vibrator?IPX7 means the vibrator is fully waterproof — safe for submersion in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes. This makes it bath-safe, shower-safe and easy to clean under running water. It is the standard waterproof rating to look for when buying a vibrator.
Can I use my vibrator in the bath?Only if it is rated IPX7. Using a non-waterproof electrical toy in bathwater creates an electric shock hazard — this is a genuine safety risk. If your toy is IPX7, it is fully safe for bath use. Apply water-based lubricant even in water as water washes away natural lubrication.
What is the difference between waterproof and splash-proof?Waterproof (IPX7) means the toy can be fully submerged. Splash-proof (IPX4) means it can handle water splashes but should not be submerged or held under running water. Only waterproof toys should be used in the bath or shower. Splash-proof toys should be cleaned with a damp cloth, not rinsed.
Can I charge my waterproof vibrator straight after using it in the bath?No — dry the toy completely first. Even waterproof vibrators must be dried thoroughly before charging. Water near a charging port while connected to power creates an electrical hazard. Dry with a lint-free cloth and allow the charging area to air dry before plugging in.
